On the Column of Trajan, cargo boats carrying their freight float in the river in front of the buildings of a “supply-port,” on the left, and of a “harbour-town,” to the right.  The figure of the river-god, “Danuvius,” emerges from the waves of the river itself (Lepper and Frere, 49–50).
